"Four-time major winner Ernie Els feels his four testing rounds at the Irish Open have been the perfect preparation for next month's U.S. Open," Bernie McGuire of Reuters writes. "Els endured a trying time at the Royal County Down course in Newcastle, Northern Ireland, finishing on Sunday with a one-over-par 72 for a 10-over-par tally in bright but windy conditions. After four days here at Royal County Down, it will make Chambers Bay look like it's on steroids,' Els said."

"Another captain's pick for McGinley," the headline to John Huggan's column in the Scotsman says. Paul McGinley's success as the European Ryder Cup captain has given him options. "McGinley has yet to decide between troubleshooting corporate advisor, television pundit, or a return to a (almost) full-time playing career," Huggan writes.

Jack Nicklaus, host of the Memorial this week, is still competitive, though not competing at any kind of level that matters, columnist Rob Oller writes in the Columbus Dispatch. "I lost my vehicle to golf competition, which was my ability to play the game," Nicklaus said. "But even when I still play today, when we go out and play those silly little (exhibitions) with Gary Player and Lee Trevino, there is no way in the world I want to lose. And there are only three teams, for crying out loud."
