Catching up with last European Ryder Cup site (is that a fighter jet on the fairway?)

September 03, 2014

The impending Ryder Cup at Gleneagles in Scotland seems a good time to see what's happening at the last European Ryder Cup site, Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, host of the 2010 competition.

Here are photos taken Wednesday.

These aren't actual military vehicles, but full-sized models placed there in advance of the NATO Summit there Thursday and Friday.

More than 9,000 British police officers are providing security and will be "deployed across the golf course at the Celtic Manor Resort, in Newport, and along a 13-kilometre (eight-mile) steel fence around the site in anticipation of the arrival of 67 world leaders for crisis talks on Russia's role in the war in Ukraine," AFP reported.

"US President Barack Obama is attending the meeting of the military alliance and security is tight, not least because Britain last week raised its terrorism threat level."

Celtic Manor has three golf courses (no word on whether the president is bringing along his golf clubs). The 2010 Ryder Cup was played on the Twenty-Ten Course.
