HOYLAKE, England -- Rory McIlroy all but cemented his status as a secret American on Tuesday at the British Open, wearing what can only be described as a flat brimmish-style hat (he's not the only one to make the transition).
But it turns out, this is just the latest in a series of tweaks Rory has made to his headwear since bursting onto the golf scene. Here's a brief history of some of the major trends in Rory McIlroy's headwear through the years:
Rory's officially on flat brim watch. Notice that the swoosh is slightly larger than normal, too. A key indicator.
His first year with a Nike hat was pretty uneventful. Very corporate-chic.
The bill of the Jumeirah hat looks a little crooked.
Rory sported the mesh trucker hat for a while. It was all the rage back in 2011.
Let's be real: this era of Rory McIlroy headwear was more about hair control.
Is that hat wrinkled? That hat kind of looks wrinkled.
Rory went hatless for a while in 2008, and while it probably felt liberating to let that curly fro fly, it probably wasn't the most pragmatic choice.
Apparently wary of the tyranny of the normal hats, Rory McIlroy tested a visor at one point. It didn't stick.
