Make The Turn Challenge #16: Power core essentials

June 30, 2014

__Training can at times get pretty stale. Your progress plateaus, you find boredom in your routine and you spend more and more time counting the seconds until you're out of the gym.

If this sounds like you, it's time to get re-inspired by incorporating a movement that fully challenges your mind and body. The perfect remedy? This super slick exercise known as the "Turkish Get-Up."

Work with a personal trainer these days and you very likely won't be spending time sitting or laying down on a machine. Not only do machines remove the bodies' need to maintain balance and stability, you also only train within a single plane of motion. All of which doesn't really replicate any physical requirement of sport or life.

Exercises like the "Get-Up" promote growth within the parameters of "Functional Movement," where all of the bodies movement capacities work together to effectively execute a task. In short, you get more bang for your buck by doing something that will actually help you hit a golf ball, hop on a surfboard or play with your kids.

Whether you're a beginner or have been training for years, this exercise can be extremely difficult and a little frustrating. That's why I love it so much. It's a real challenge every time you do it. With just a little practice, you'll get good at coordinating the movements, which will make you feel really empowered to keep trying and adding cool elements such as this to your exercise routine.
