Fantasy Fix: Will Jason Day steal the show in Tiger Woods' return?

June 25, 2014

Let's start by taking a moment to recognize what Kevin Streelman did last week at the Travelers Championship. Seven straight birdies. To end a tournament. And win by one shot. We've never seen that on the PGA Tour and we may never see it again. Congrats, Kevin. Next time, though, can you just give us a heads up?

Anyway, the tour moves on to the Quicken Loans National, where Tiger Woods will make his much-anticipated return. Here's what we expect the field at Congressional to do with our weekly Yahoo! fantasy golf lineup:

Starters -- (A-List): Brandt Snedeker. We don't want to miss out when this guy finally gets going again, and there's a good chance it comes at Congressional. Snedeker has finished in top 10 in three of his last four trips there.

(B-List): Jason Day. The Aussie didn't come through for us as well as we had hoped last week (T-18), but he's returning to a site of his U.S. Open runner-up in 2011. OK, so he finished eight shots behind Rory McIlroy that year, but still.

(B-List): Jordan Spieth. Is there ever a good time not to put this guy in your lineup? He finished solo sixth here last year in his second trip to Congressional.

(C-List): K.J. Choi. The South Korean looked on his way to picking up his first PGA Tour win since the 2011 Players until Kevin Streelman happened. But he's still played well in three straight tournaments and was the inaugural winner of this tournament in 2007.

Bench/Backups: Tiger Woods (just in case!), Hunter Mahan, Bill Haas, and Brendon Todd.

Knockout/One-and-done pick: Jason Day. Day's terrific play in majors has earned him a lot of attention, but if he wants to earn that top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking he covets, he needs to start winning more stroke-play events on the PGA Tour. And as if he needed more motivation, he'll be playing Thursday and Friday with the tournament host, and Jordan Spieth. This might not be a major, but it should feel like one in that pairing.

Previously used: Keegan Bradley (Doral), Tim Clark (Sony), Graham DeLaet (Phoenix), Luke Donald (Valspar), Rickie Fowler (Honda Classic), Jim Furyk (Heritage), Bill Haas (Farmers), Charley Hoffman (Travelers), Billy Horschel (Zurich), Charles Howell III (Humana), Freddie Jacobson (Valero), Dustin Johnson (Northern Trust), Zach Johnson (Colonial), Matt Kuchar (U.S. Open), Martin Laird (Kapalua), Graeme McDowell (Bay Hill), Ryan Palmer (Memphis), Justin Rose (Memorial), Adam Scott (Masters), Jordan Spieth (Houston), Henrik Stenson (Players), Jimmy Walker (Pebble -- winner!), Gary Woodland (Nelson).
