Playing golf and hiking at Torrey Pines

There are few things in life that sound better than playing golf from sun-up to sun-down. I'm as hardcore about that as they come. So when my sister suggested we take a golf trip that included hiking, I asked myself, "Why wouldn't we just play golf the entire time?" Then I thought about it a bit more. Golf is a great way to explore a new city and experience the outdoors, but so is hiking. Combining the two activities arguably offers a more well-rounded adventure and ensures versatility and a break from monotony. Add in the element of a road trip, and you've got yourself a golf trip that'll keep you enthralled from start to finish.

Over Memorial Day Weekend, my sister, two friends and I took a trip that started at Torrey Pines (San Diego) and ended at TPC Harding Park (San Francisco). We essentially lived out of our Ford Expedition (a car that comfortably accommodated four golfers and all our golf/hiking gear) and played golf and hiked our way up the Pacific Coast Highway.

Did you know that both the North Course and South Course at Torrey Pines are carved out of the Torrey Pines State Reserve? That means beautiful hiking trails lie within walking distance of both courses. Click on the image below for our account of hiking and playing golf at Torrey Pines. Soon, we'll reveal our account of hiking and playing golf in Monterey and San Francisco. These are two activities that are seldomly paired, and that needs to change.
