Missing links: Pimento cheese, caddies’ favorite nun and a $236 million golf course

A former nun who lived adjacent to the Augusta National Golf Club began renting a one-bedroom unit on her property to a caddie during the Masters. Eventually she surrendered her home for the week to a foursome of caddies, “the boys,” as she called them, who formed a bond with her. Karen Crouse has the story in the New York Times.

Augusta National is renowned for many things, among them, curiously, the pimento cheese sandwich they peddle at the Masters each year. Meet the family that might have been responsible for this tradition unlike any other, in this story by Meg Mirshak in the Augusta Chronicle.

It had better be a world-class course, at that price. The cost of building the Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point by the Whitestone Bridge in New York City has risen to $236 million, according to the New York Daily News. A public course that was designed by Jack Nicklaus, it is scheduled to open in 2015.

The Drive, Chip and Putt Championship, among other initiatives, makes Augusta National Golf Club “really…almost leaders in the industry in growing the game, believe it or not,” Paul Azinger tells Jeff Shain in this New York Times story. “They back up their talk with their walk when it comes to what they have done here.”

Dottie Pepper says that Judy Rankin is her favorite golf commentator. “She taught me to say the most you can in as few words as possible. That’s what I try to do,” Pepper said in this story by Bob Weiner in the Daily Gazette that serves Pepper’s home town of Saratoga, N.Y. Pepper, working as an analyst for ESPN, has become the first woman to broadcast live from Augusta National.
