Weird golf news of the week: Tim Tebow's biggest supporter is a golf pro

November 19, 2013

Plenty of Jacksonville Jaguars fans have made it known they want their home football team to sign out-of-work quarterback Tim Tebow. It can't get much worse for the Jags (1-9), after all.

Oddly enough, there's a golf connection between a former PGA Tour player and the NFL's biggest lightning rod. ESPN's Darren Rovell reported Dewey Arnette was the man behind an ad asking owner Shahid Khan to sign the free agent in Monday's edition of the Florida Times-Union. The ad reads: "Dear Mr. Khan, Sign Tim Tebow & we will fill the stadium! Signed, The Citizens of Jacksonville." Here's a video on the story:

Don't remember the name Dewey Arnette? He played 64 PGA Tour events and once made eight consecutive birdies in a round, which tied a tour record until Mark Calcavecchia's nine in a row at the 2009 Canadian Open. Arnette is still a golf pro and has taught Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke, among others.

Rovell's story also said Arnette has bought ads on radio stations and billboards, as well as held up signs and handed out t-shirts promoting Tebow's return to Jacksonville, where he played his high school football.

Arnette's assertion that more fans will show up to Jaguars games with Tebow as quarterback is probably correct. But for how long? After mixed results with the Denver Broncos, Tebow played sparingly for the New York Jets last season before being cut by the New England Patriots in August.
