Book on William Powell, Clearview award finalist

July 22, 2013

Other finalists include Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's "What Color Is My World," Wynton Marsalis' "Squeak! Rumble! Whomp! Whomp! Whomp!," and Kelly Starling Lyons' "Cakes for Tosh" and "Ellen's Broom." The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony on July 19 at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem.

"Twice As Good" tells the story of the pioneer William Powell, a golf professional who built Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio, the only course designed, built, owned and operated by an African-American. As a child, Powell was taught that "if you are going to get ahead in this world, you can't be as good as the white children, you have to be twice as good." Hence, the title of the book.

More information about the book, including interviews with Powell's daughter Renee and the author, is available at Michelson's website.
