Texas men enjoying top spot in coaches' poll

With freshman Jordan Spieth competing at the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open, the short-handed Texas men's squad finished T-2 finish at the Aggie Invitational last weekend, demonstrating the team's depth and solidifying its hold on the top spot in the Golf World/Nike Golf Division I coaches' poll.

With 11 tournaments under their belts as UT prepares to compete in the Big 12 Championship next week, John Fields' crew has won seven team titles and has finished in the top five nine times. Spieth and senior Dylan Frittelli are ranked 1 and 2 in the most recent Golfstat Cup standings.

The poll requires a brief explainer: Auburn jumped Alabama to the No. 2 spot, but the voting closed before the SEC Championship ended and the Crimson Tide defeated the Tigers for the conference title. Similarly, Oregon dropped to No. 12, but the voting closed before the Ducks had claimed the team title at the Aggie Invitational.

Men's D-II April 30 poll (260).jpgBarry stayed atop the latest Division II coaches' poll, earning seven of the 15 available first-place votes. The Buccaneers have claimed three team titles during the 2011-12 season, winning the Nova Southeastern Invitational, Bobcat Intercollegiate and the Buccaneer Invitational. However they did lost to No. 2 Nova Southeastern at the Sunshine State Conference Championship.

Men's D-III April 30 poll (260).jpgWith five victories this season, Methodist maintained its No. 1 ranking in the Division III coaches' poll. The Monarchs earned 16 of the 17 available first-place votes as they prepare to compete in the NCAA postseason.

Rising to No. 2 in the poll is Oglethorpe, thanks to three straight runner-up performances after beginning the spring season with a victory at the Wynlakes Wynter Nationals.

Men's NAIA April 30 poll (260).jpgOklahoma Christian claimed 10 of the 12 available first-place votes to secure the No. 1 ranking in the latest NAIA coaches' poll. The Eagles have had nine top-three finishes in 10 starts.

Meridian and South Mountain each claimed six of the seven available first-place votes in their respective divisions to maintain their top spots in the NJCAA coaches' polls.
