Trending: Rory shows Caroline how to beat Maria Sharapova

March 06, 2012

Rory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki's relationship has propelled them to media-darling status--at least in the sports world. With McIlory attaining the title of world's No. 1 golfer, the spotlight is sure to shine brighter on the couple throughout the summer and major-tournament months of both the golf and tennis seasons. And on Monday night, they might have shared their biggest stage to date.

Only one-day after winning the Honda Classic, Rory was in New York to watch his girlfriend play a friendly exhibition match against Maria Sharapova at Madison Square Garden--an opponent she is 2-5 against and currently ranks two spots behind. Though she spent 67 weeks as the world's No. 1 ranked women's tennis player (only 66 more than McIlroy), Wozniacki has "tumbled" all the way down to No. 4. Her 2008 victory over Sharapova in the U.S. Open not withstanding, it's safe to assume the Russian beauty has Wozniacki's number. Which is maybe why, in front of a world audience and celebrity-filled arena, Caroline asked Rory to fill-in for a point against her rival. And like a true No. 1, he not only played the point, he won it. Sharapova went on to win the match.
