Those pesky Petticrew brothers torched a sun-soaked group of competitors at Golf Digest’s Buddies Golf Getaway in Orlando. After a 54 in the opening round of a two-man Shamble, Buck and Paul Petticrew of Virgina Beach, Va., and Indianapolis, Ind., displayed large sleeves of balls by showing up the next morning as they faced a hostile crowd, a buffet breakfast and a TaylorMade clubfitting.
Finch was my partner for two rounds at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando Golf Club, and on the first day we played with Boris Gabriel and Gissela Rojas, an obnoxiously perfect looking couple from Guatemala who took up the game in April.
Distracted by the silky swing and sexy accent of Rojas, it was no wonder why Finch and I got beat by a few athletic newbies getting two shots a hole. She called him “Papa,” and he called her, “Mama.” And then I called her Mama, and Papa almost knocked me into Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, which was on the other side of the bushes.
From the accommodations at the Hilton Bonnet Creek, all the food and cold drinks, tee prizes and camaraderie, there were actually lots of winners Oct. 21-23. Thanks to Hilton HHonors and other sponsors, such as: Ashworth, FedEx, Gentleman Jack, Gillette and Golf Trip Genius.
And a special thanks to Mark Rolfing (middle) who broke away from his
buddies trip to spend some time making friends with the assembled group and especially a spirited pack of fertilizer salesmen from Tennessee. Rolfing answered an hour of questions about golf in Hawaii, buddies trips with tour players and sounds Tiger’s knee made when he was in the U.S. Open playoff against Rocco Mediate.
Jon and Linda Davis from Naples, Fla., finished second, and since I have the keyboard, I’ll say Finch and I finished third, even though we were probably third to last, but as is the case with every other buddies trip, I’m already looking forward to next year.
After it was over, Finch and I jumped on with Evans (red shirt) and “Golf Exchange presented by The Honda Classic
” to recap the buddies event and to talk about Golf Digest’s list of the 75 Best Golf Resorts in North America, which is in the November issue of the magazine.
