Geoff Ogilvy withdraws with shoulder injury

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Geoff Ogilvy has joined Tiger Woods in the undesirable position of not knowing if he will be physically ready for the upcoming U.S. Open at Congressional CC.

Ogilvy, the 2006 Open champion, withdrew from the Players Friday morning with a left shoulder injury that has been hampering him since the Florida swing. Ogilvy was two-over par after nine holes on the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass and five over for the tournament when he pulled out.

"It's obviously a concern," Ogilvy said outside the fitness trailer after shutting it down for the week. "I had an MRI a few weeks ago that showed this white mass of inflammation, and I hoped rest would help it. We'll see what this means for my schedule."

Ogilvy said that the pain was manageable at the Masters, where he finished T-4, but it has steadily gotten worse after playing the following week at the Valero Texas Open. He intended to play last week at the Wells Fargo Championship before deciding he needed another week of rest.

"I went pretty hard after it today to see where I was. It's pretty sore," said Ogilvy, who already missed the first month of the season after getting 12 stitches for a cut in his right index finger prior to the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
