Since winning the Gifford Collegiate Championship title to close the fall season, the 18-year-old from Los Alamitos, Calif., has gone from front-runner for freshman of the year honors to a legitimate contender for national player of the year, with a playoff loss at the Amer Ari Invitational and two more victories, including a triumph at the USC Invitational March 2. A final-round 68 gave Cantlay a six-under 207 total at North Ranch CC in Westlake Village, Calif., outpacing Arizona State's Scott Pinckney by two strokes.

"I played well," Cantlay said. "I didn't miss too many shots and got a couple putts to fall at the end."

In his last 12 rounds, Cantlay has shot just two rounds in the 70s, the worst being a 74 in the first round of the spring opener in Hawaii. His season-long stroke average has dipped to 70.06.

Lee Lopez, UCLA

With birdies on her last two holes, the sophomore closed the Bruin Wave Invitational with a three-under 69 to beat teammates Glory Yang by one stroke and Stephanie Kono by two. A four-under 212 total for Lopez at Robinson Ranch GC in Santa Clarita, Calif., was good enough to earn her her first individual title since transferring from Long Beach State in 2009.

"I don't think it actually has sunk in yet. It feels great," Lopez said. "Somebody told me on the 18th that if you want to win, you should birdie this hole. I was like 'OK.' And it turned out to be a birdie."

Lopez performance also help the Bruins cruise to an easy 20-stroke victory over Arizona for the team title, UCLA's third of the 2010-11 season.
