Here's why LPGA likely to postpone Mexican event

January 12, 2011

The LPGA's concerns about holding its Tres Marias Championship in Morelia, Mexico, in April (reported here by the Golf Channel's Randall Mell) are not unfounded, as these two examples demonstrate:

-- From an Associated Press report dated Dec. 10: "In Morelia Thursday, gunmen fired into the air to force drivers and passengers from their vehicles, torched the cars and used them to blockade all five roads leading into the city, said Jonathan Arrendondo, a spokesman for the state attorney general's office.

"Later Thursday, armed gunmen in two trucks ambushed a group of federal and state police patrolling a highway outside of Morelia, injuring three."

-- From the State Department's most recent travel warning, dated Sept. 10, 2010: "Recent violent attacks and persistent security concerns have prompted the U.S. Embassy to urge U.S. citizens to defer unnecessary travel to Michoacán...and to advise U.S. citizens residing or traveling in those areas to exercise extreme caution."

Morelia is the capital of Michoacán.
