Bad weather cancels Champions' Challenge

July 14, 2010

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland -- It might have produced a memorable moment or two, as was the case when British Open champions played an exhibition at the Old Course in 2000 and Sam Snead did a little dance on the Swilken Bridge. Unfortunately, though, a persistent, cold rain has caused officials to cancel the Champions' Challenge scheduled to start at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Seven three- and four-man teams of Open winners were to play the first, second, 17th and 18th holes in a best-ball competition to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the first British Open in 1860. Roberto De Vicenzo, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Lee Trevino, Tom Weiskopf and Tiger Woods were among the golfers who were going to play.
