Johnson's rough start opens door for the field

And just like that, Dustin Johnson's three-shot lead has evaporated. His chances of winning the U.S. Open are quickly dwindling as well.

The 502-yard par-4 second hole is supposed to be one of the toughest on the course, but not after you stripe a 340-yard drive down the middle. Despite doing just that, however, Johnson missed the green and had to hack one out of the high rough left-handed. He then fluffed a chip shot, and then took three more shots to get down for a disastrous triple-bogey seven.

With the score, Johnson fell into a tie with Graeme McDowell at three-under, but things only got worse from there. Sticking with his aggressive game-plan, Johnson tried to drive over the dogleg on No. 3, but hooked it more than he intended. No one was able to find his ball or determine that it had indeed entered into a lateral hazard within the allotted five minutes, so Johnson had to play it as a lost ball and go back to re-tee.

He wound up making a double bogey to drop out of the lead and to five-over on the day after three holes and back to one-under, where he started Saturday's third round. The young star still has 15 holes left, but any time you hear Johnny Miller utter the words "colossal collapse," it's not a good thing.
