Mickelson, Irwin in U.S. Mid-Amateur

Among the more familiar names competing in the U.S. Mid-Amateur that begins today at the Kiawah Island Club are those of Mickelson and Irwin, though they belong to lesser known members of the famous families.

Tim Mickelson, 32, is Phil's brother. He is the golf coach at the University of San Diego and a member of the Farms in Rancho Santa Fe, where he plays to a plus-3.3 handicap index.

Steve Irwin, 35, is Hale Irwin's son and is the vice president of Hale Irwin Golf Services. A member of Lakewood Country Club in Lakewood, Colo., Irwin plays to a plus-1.6 handicap index.
