Annika: 'Serena should know better'

September 13, 2009

Annika Sorenstam on Twitter weighed in on the behavior of Serena Williams in her U.S. Open semifinal match with Kim Clijsters Saturday:

"Sad ending to Women's tennis US Open semis last night. Serena should know better. Glad to see sportsmanship prevailed. Congrats to Mom Kim!"

At the end of the match, Williams was called for a foot fault, verbally assaulted the line judge, then was penalized a point for unsportsmanlike conduct, ending the match. The unranked Clijsters, who has an 18-month old daughter, won, 6-4, 7-5, in only her third tournament since ending her retirement.

Sorenstam, incidentally, was a junior tennis star before finding golf.
